Our design 'Breathing Square' for the Vyzvolennia Square in Mariupol, Ukraine was placed in the top 10 of the International Ideas Competition 2020.
The intent of the design was to create an integrated indoor and outdoor environment and connect the Mira Avenue, the Vyzvolennia Square and the DASU building. The design created a comfortable, safe space full of outdoor opportunities for people to wander and explore, with play areas for all ages, dining spaces for families and friends and large open spaces for events. The site arrangement provided universal access and was inspired by the notion of creating a health, sustainable and integrated environment for the community.
Air pollution brought by prevailing winds, was a high risk factor for users of the 2.75 ha Square and became the focal point of our design. Our design incorporated air filtering planting materials, landforms and technologies to create a gradient filtering system to mitigate air pollution in the Square.
