Category: Competition Entry | Public Space
Our design for Rahovec Square was informed by four strategies: improve access and connectivity, the principles of water sensitive urban design, site functionality and considerations of the micro-climate and climate change.
We relocated the existing memorial to improve site circulation and open up space for a diverse range of commercial and recreational opportunities. These included design for modular stands for markets and a market hall and new playground. Landscaping and pathways link the new market spaces and leisure areas to existing buildings (Sport Hall to Plaza Hotel). Direct connections within the space enable pedestrians and cyclists to move easily through the space.
Visual connections to the mountain reflect the connection between the natural and built environments. We use green and blue infrastructure to mitigate climate change and other micro-climate conditions, enabling the use of water sensitive urban design to mitigate the impact of flooding events.
