Category: Competition Entry | Strategic Planning

Six ecological restoration design strategies informed our design to improve sustainability, connectivity, liveability, productivity, equity and the economy in and around Penang Bay. These strategies focused on ecological restoration in the water, at the shoreline, on structures, through land formation, ocean farming and for tourism.

Our design was focused in and around the main waterfront areas of George Town and Butterworth to develop them for local and tourist use and enhance the connection between them.

We designed a wetlands park with neighbouring retail plaza and three tier planting structures to remove pollutants and create habitats in the river and estuary. New viewing and fishing platforms, a floating farm, floating retail plaza and floating restaurants provide underwater habitat for plants, fish and crustaceans. Cyclists could jump on a bike at the wetlands park and plaza, travel via the Marina Boulevard and George Town gateway and to the skycab where they could cross the river go to Butterworth, access the ferry terminal and ride up the coast to the floating restaurant for a meal or to have swim. New parks further in both George Town and Butterworth improve liveability with opportunities for exercise and sport. Hi-tech floating farms and the renovation of the cruise terminal and ferry port support job growth and promotes national and international travel and trade.
