Inspired by the history of Alexandra, the Bakers Lane renewal design reflects the indigenous flora and fauna of the area, the gold rush that put Alexandra on the map and the timber and mixed farming that now defines the town. To increase engagement in what is essentially a thoroughfare between Grant Street and a car park, we added new timber outdoor furniture, ground painting, wayfinding signage and an art mural.

The journey starts at the Grant Street entry, where wooden rail wayfinding signage on the wall direct people to destinations within Alexandra. Under the sign, the painting of rail tracks on the ground leads people into the laneway to relax and explore. Further down the laneway, ground paintings reflect mixed-farming in livestock footprints, then a river with gold and finally birds flying in the sky with the tracks of locally endangered and vulnerable fauna. The wall mural design was left open for local artist input, with only the theme set as local fauna and lush forest.
